Tax Institute to feature USC Law professors, other noted speakers
USC Law Professor Elizabeth Garrett, former IRS Commissioner Fred T. Goldberg Jr., Stanford Law School Professor Joseph Bankman, and controversial tax-cut advocate Grover Norquist will serve as keynote speakers for the USC Law 2006 Tax Institute Jan. 23-25 at the Wilshire Grand Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.

Attention 3Ls: degree progress checklist
A Degree Progress Checklist was distributed to 3Ls in the fall. If you did not complete and submit the checklist at that time, you may obtain another copy in Room 104. This checklist will assist you in monitoring your degree progress and will allow us to check your assessment of your remaining graduation requirements. If you do not choose to submit this, you should be sure that you have verified for yourself that you will satisfy all graduation requirements.

Financial Aid
Attention 1Ls and 2Ls: financial aid renewal
All 1Ls and 2Ls should have received (in their law school mailboxes) instructions and forms to apply for financial aid for the 2006-07 academic year. If you did not receive this or have misplaced it, please come to Room 104. The FAFSA (or renewal FAFSA) must have been completed online or received by the Federal Processor no later than Feb. 24. USC Law Supplemental Form (which is attached to the instructions) and a copy of your 2005 Federal Tax Return (or a non-filing statement if you are not required to file) must be submitted to Room 104 no later than May 5. If you have any questions, please see Mary Bingham or Liam Gillen in Room 104.

PILF wins third place in Hogan & Hartson Challenge
PILF would like to thank all of the law students who completed the Hogan & Hartson Challenge. USC Law had an amazing turnout and won third place. That honor means Hogan & Hartson donated $1,000 to PILF to help fund this year's summer grants!

Rabbi Dorff, professor and author, speaks on Judaism
The Jewish Law Students Association proudly hosts Rabbi Elliot Dorff on Tuesday, Jan. 24, during lunch in Room 101. Rabbi Dorff will lead a discussion into religion, Judaism and the law focusing on "The Role of the Advocate in the Jewish Tradition: Representing a Client that You Believe is Guilty." Rabbi Dorff, rector and distinguished professor of philosophy at the University of Judaism and visiting professor of Jewish Law at UCLA School of Law, is the author of ten books and more than 150 articles on Jewish thought, law and ethics. Free falafel, shawarma and hummus. Lunch will be provided.
Moot Court quarterfinal round
The executive board of the Hale Moot Court Honors Competition would like to invite the entire law school community to attend the quarterfinal rounds of this year's competition on Jan. 24 and 25, 5:30–9:30 p.m., in Ackerman courtroom. CLSP workshop presented by Yale's Donald Green
The USC-Caltech Center for the Study of Law and Politics Participatory Democracy Workshop Series will be hosting the first workshop for 2006 on Jan. 24 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Donald Green from the Yale University Political Science Department will present two working papers titled, "Putting the Party Back into Politics: Results of an Experiment Designed to Increase Voter Turnout through Music, Food and Entertainment," and "The Impact of Radio Advertisements on Voter Turnout and Electoral Competition." The papers are available on the CSLP web site. The intent of these workshops is to provide feedback to the authors on a work-in-progress. Green will discuss his research for 15 minutes and leave the rest of the time for questions and discussion. The format of this workshop depends on all participants reading the papers beforehand so that our time can be spent mainly in discussion. A reception in the USC faculty lounge will follow the workshop in Room 433. The Workshop series is supported by the Gould School of Law, the Annenberg School for Communication and the Urban Initiative.
Call for student-written articles on entertainment or sports
The Michigan State University College of Law Entertainment and Sports Law Journal is now accepting student-written papers for possible publication in its spring 2006 issue. The paper should focus on a topic relating to the entertainment or sports law industries and should not exceed 35 pages in length, double-spaced in 12-point font. Each paper must be wholly written by the student with no outside assistance and may not have been accepted for publication in any other journal. Students must be currently enrolled in an ABA-accredited law school in the United States. Submissions must be postmarked by Feb. 5, and two copies of the paper along with an electronic copy on a 3.5” floppy disk are required. These items will not be returned to the student. National Law School Mediation Tournament
The Chicago Bar Association Young Lawyers Section and the International Academy of Dispute Resolution invite students to participate in the Fourth Annual National Law School Mediation Tournament on March 31-April 1 in Chicago. The event is an instructional tournament to train law students on how to be mediators. Teams are made up of three students. Each student must fill the role of mediator for one round, while the other two act as attorney and client. Registration is $300 and includes food and beverages; a school can enter up to four teams.
