The Law Library Collection
The Law Library contains print, online and other electronic materials. These materials are housed on the Library's Main Floor and on the 3d Floor in various locations. Consult Law Library Map for general location of collections. You also can locate Law Library materials using ADVOCAT, the Law Library's online catalog.
Many of the Law Library's print materials are arranged in subject order according to the Library of Congress classification scheme, i.e., by call numbers representing broad subject areas and more specific topics within such areas. Other print materials in the collection are shelved in particular areas by jurisdiction and type of material, without call numbers; for example, California statutes, cases, and related materials are shelved together at designated locations. Additionally, legal periodicals are marked with a PER designation and are shelved together alphabetically by title.
The bulk of the Law Library's collection is shelved in the Main Floor and 3d Floor stacks. Additionally, certain print items are kept in Open Reserve and Closed Reserve.
Materials in the Open Reserve Collection include selected research sources such as treatises, hornbooks, Restatements, nutshells, dictionaries, practice guides, form books, and looseleaf services.
Closed Reserve is located behind the Service Counter in the Circulation Area. Selected collection items and course reserve materials are housed in Closed Reserve, and may be checked out for limited periods for library use only. Additionally, the Louis M. Brown Client Library, a collection of legal resources for laypeople with legal research needs, is located in Closed Reserve.
A number of electronic resources both legal and non-legal may be accessed from the research work stations located in the Dunning Foyer adjacent to the service counter.
