Carole E. Handler is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Wildman Harrold. Ms. Handler has tried numerous entertainment, trademark, copyright, and antitrust cases in state and federal courts in California, New York and Pennsylvania. Her primary fields of practice are copyright in new media, antitrust, and the interface of antitrust and intellectual property. She has tried landmark cases involving the application of copyright principles to new technologies, as well as constitutional and antitrust cases involving motion picture licensing and distribution.
Her recent significant cases include representing Marvel Enterprises in its battle to reclaim the motion picture rights to “Spider-Man,” as well as establishing the motion picture industry’s exclusive rights to control the distribution and performance of copyrighted works in new media. She developed the antitrust theories for the National Basketball Association in its litigation with WGN and the Chicago Bulls; defended a major studio against television “block booking” claims; and was lead counsel for Turner Entertainment Co. in litigation over foreign theme park rights.
Ms. Handler holds an A.B. in history and literature from Radcliffe College; a master’s degree in city planning from the University of Pennsylvania; and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She has been named one of the “Top 50 Women Litigators in California” by Daily Journal Extra since the list began in 2002, and one of the “Lawyers of the Year” in 2001 by California Lawyer. She serves on numerous committees and boards in the legal community, is a board member of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Committee of Antitrust Section, and a board member of Public Counsel.
