Volunteering Opportunities
If you seek a career in public service, but have never worked in public service and know few people who have, a great first step is to volunteer. Volunteering offers you great way to gain contacts and experience. Another benefit of volunteering is the flexibility to choose organizations or projects that interest you and fit into your schedule. If you are looking for ideas, review the Public Service Guide, the Volunteer Binder and the Non-Profit Employer Files for information about organizations that welcome volunteers. You may also contact the USC Public Interest Law Foundation for additional information.
How does a volunteer position further my career goals?
Your resume can be greatly enhanced by volunteering, as it is not necessary to differentiate between paid and unpaid positions. If you are unsure whether you wish to pursue a public service career, a volunteer position can be a simple, low-pressure way to help you decide. Should you decide to go the private firm route, student volunteer activities will be of benefit to you because private firms also desire people with varied legal experience. Additionally, pro bono opportunities allow you to continue public service work and professional development even while working for a private firm. Some employers credit pro bono work to an associate's billable hour requirements. While researching potential employers, we encourage you to investigate whether they have a structured pro bono policy and how they compensate their employees.
When should I apply?
Volunteer positions are available year round; for specific information, refer to the Volunteer Binder, the Non-Profit Employer Files in the Career Services Office, the USC Guide to Public Service Law. You may also wish to contact the Public Interest Law Foundation.
