The Los Angeles District Attorney (Steve Cooley, USC Law '73) handles state and local criminal prosecution. Your internship may include court appearances on preliminary hearings, short bench and jury trials, and legal research and writing. 210 West Temple Street

The U.S. Attorney's Office includes the Civil, Criminal, and Tax Divisions. As an intern, you will conduct research, as well as attend hearings, conferences, depositions, and trials. Interns in the U.S. Attorney's Office are exposed to the following practice areas: Federal prosecution, criminal law, federal tax law (civil and criminal), bankruptcy, civil rights and employment discrimination, environmental law, fraud on the government, labor, immigration, Federal Tort Claims Act, and civil fraud. You will work directly with defense lawyers who represent individuals charged with federal criminal violations. The internship will involve quite a bit of research and writing, and you'll likely accompany your supervising attorney to court, as well as represent inmates at parole revocation hearings. Los Angeles, CA - Los Angeles City Attorney (Number 16)
The Los Angeles City Attorney represents the City and City employees in Employee Relations and Workers' Compensation matters, Aviation Law, and in Land Use and Real Property disputes. The City Attorney also handles criminal prosecution through its Criminal Trials Division and the Gang Unit. You'll do legal research, draft motions and other legal documents, as well as participate in depositions, arbitrations, court hearings, and administrative hearings. You may choose to work in either the Federal Section or the Legal Unit of the EEOC. This agency is charged with enforcement of federal laws that prohibit discrimination or harassment in employment by federal agencies on the basis on race, sex, age, national origin, religion, disability, or in reprisal for the employee's having asserted rights protected by the laws against discrimination. Interns review and evaluate investigations by federal agencies of discrimination complaints, and participate as law clerks to administrative law judges in hearings. USC law students have the opportunity to intern in several different divisions of the California Attorney General's Office including Civil Law, Public Rights, Criminal, and Environmental. The practice areas include environmental and land law; charitable trusts; civil rights; health education and welfare; government, consumer, business, tax and criminal law; writs and trials; and correctional law. USC students who intern at the FTC are assigned work similar in scope to that of starting attorneys. You will conduct consumer interviews, research and write, and assist with discovery and litigation. The Small Business Administration is involved in commercial law (civil lawsuits), bankruptcy (Creditor's rights), real estate (eminent domain actions), loan documentation (compliance reviews), and government contracting (contract reviews).
